Wii-nderful Wii-kend…

Posted by – February 12, 2007

Just to let you all know this friday I got my Wii in the mail! … After playing Wii Sports for a short amount of time (count that in hours will you?!) I must say that that little pierce of console is every bit as fun as one could expect! … It may sound cheap, but once you’ve had for more than 24 hours (of which 6 hours was spent on the machine, naturally) I have already ordered: Legend of Zelda, an extra Wii-mote and a classic controller… to begin with :)

Might also go for Wii Play and Far Cry shortly :-D

All in all this has been a Wii-nderful Wii-kend …

Gem : My Game Development Project…

Posted by – February 1, 2007

First of all: Sorry for not posting in a while, but have been rather busy with my sparetime development project… And now it is time for me to reveal a bit about what the project is about! I have dedicated an entire page on this blog for the Gem Engine, which is the tile-rendering engine I have started working on. Check out the page and be sure to give me some feedback (of course remember that this is an early stage of development!)…

You can also expect me to post a few more posts on this blog shortly – at this point in time I have a couple that are almost finished :)

Lawsuit of the day: Internal Affairs!

Posted by – November 23, 2006

It is not secret that the four largest music distributors have formed a cartel, which apparently is legal in their business – unlike in every other business, where the forces of the free market is required to roam! These last 5-10 years the music and movie industry have been extremely busy suing their own customers and primarily their competitors for “copyright infringement” – settling lawsuit after lawsuit without proper evidence in most of them – some even only on the basis of a screenshot, that can be so easily manipulated! Today, however, we look at a different lawsuit. It is the first of its kind, and it will have a real impact on the cartel… This time Universal Music Group (UMG) have chosen to sue Grouper.com, a video-sharing site, recently bought by Sony Pictures for 65 million dollars!

Before the cartel have denied what their competitors have said all along, that they are using these copyright lawsuits to scare competitors and gain control of their market shares! Now the tone is quite a bit different, as Sony Pictures is a part of Sony Corp., who also owns Sony BMG, one of the four in the music cartel… So now it is an internal affair in the cartel – and here is where it gets interesting!

Sony have now claimed that Grouper is not in any way breaking international copyright, like everyone who has been sued by the cartel has said, and also claim that UMG is doing this only to gain market share from Sony, like everyone who has been sued by the cartel has also said… All this has been covered in the Washington Post! This Grouper Gamble is therefore a very interesting lawsuit to follow as this is the first time the cartel are starting to use their own methods on their members!

Let’s hope it will lead to a complete dissolve of the cartel and reinstatement of the forces of the free markets in Music and Movie industry for the first time in history!

Lawsuit of the day!

This is mainly an update of the lawsuit between Universal and MySpace, where Universal has laid forth its claims… And they are mad, simply mad! They are demanding 150.000$ per pierce of material shared over MySpace… like in reality they loose that amount of money on lost sales if the material had not been available on MySpace?! Well, I guess Universal and the rest of the big companies in the cartel business doesn’t sue unless they can write really big numbers on the claim – after all when one claims it doesn’t have a real source of income anymore because of “piracy” it needs a lot of money from the courts … and its customers!

In China things are a bit different. Here the record companies tried to sue the Chinese search engine, Baidu, but lost the case… It is never easy to win a case against a Chinese company in Chinese courts! Perhaps the big Internet companies will all move to China shortly :)

And finally a lot of criticism has reigned down upon the proposed law-change in Australia – happily paid by the music and movie industry – which would make almost every single Australian a criminal…

Microsoft have found a new way to ensure that their competitors cannot keep up the pace with Microsoft’s products. In their upcoming Office, Office 2007, they have licensed their new interface, the Office 2007 UI, allowing persons that work on products not competing with Microsoft’s to freely use its “new” UI design, but not competing products, such as OpenOffice… How can a company keep a UI design for themselves? How is that even possible? I want to license the save-button, the new-button, the close-button and the open-button.. that will teach them!

And in the good news an American court has declared it safe to write practical anything – as long as its on the Internet! Finally a judge with an understanding of the basic rights of a democracy (he probably won’t last long in the American legal system :) )….

The world is still a strange place to be in these days, when digital rights are ill-understood by the content-providers! These clashes are bound to keep happening and be a daily event for at least a couple of years to come – until they finally start to wake up and smell the coffee that has been brewing (and even served) for the last 10-15 years!

Towers of Hangover

Damn, my head is in bad shape! A really good party last night, but wauv did that not do wonders to my head. I have to admit that a grill-party and a good drinking-spree is something just what the mind needs to clear and reset the settings, but geeeeee the day after you can really feel that reboot…

As always the picture can be seen with my comments in the Gallery … Back to bed!

Holiday is ON!

Finally the time for some well-earned vacation is at hand. Later today I will celebrate my newfound freedom with a good, relaxed grill-party at a friends house… Party pictures will probably follow soon ;)

More than 3 months of working seven days a week is now at an end – and not a second too soon! I can’t wait to feel the sunshine again… and feel the sensation of a good, cool belgium beer sliding down my hatch!

See you on the other side … hopefully ;)
